<p>The quote by famous architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe is apt to begin the discussion for the article. The very basic unit required to bring the vision of an architect to reality is the bricks, the mortar, the wood, or the glass, the building material to be specific. Given the need of the hour, the awareness is to go green and opt for natural building materials that not only increase the sustainability quotient of the project but bring down the economic investment to a lot extent. Let us now navigate through the top ten natural building materials that fit the bill as below-</p>
<h2>ADOBE</h2>
<p>Adobe is basically sun-dried bricks which are made of mud. Occasionally straws and other additives are added to a better mixture. However, the plaster of mud is ultimately required to give the finishing touch and even down the texture of the adobe bricks. Historically, this method dates back to 6000 BC and apparently has its native in South America. Going by the technicality this material is good with thermal mass which means it keeps cool in summer and warm in winters. Having said that, it does have its limitation when it comes to insulation. <h2>COB</h2>
<p>In terms of the contents, we can consider Cob to be somewhat a first cousin of Adobe. On a serious note, Cob is also made up of mud and water with the additives of straw and clay, the difference being the technique of construction. A cob is generally a spherical unit which is used to build a wall, pressing in such a way that there are no gaps or cracks. The advantage with the cob is it gives the flexibility of the form of the building. One can go for organic forms as well because the cob units can be fit into the desired form.</p>

<h2>WOOD</h2>
<p>Wood is one such universal material that it has diverse applications. Right from the basic skeleton structure of beams and columns to wooden flooring, name a building part and wood fits the part. Now which form of wood is most suitable, that is the question. Whether to use softwood or hardwood or wood veneer it all depends on the other factors like the climate, the region, and the use. Wood has excellent thermal properties. It can sustain very high temperatures without collapsing. Talking about its acoustic properties it is very good in absorbing sound. Thus, it can be used for concert halls etc. Wood also has excellent electrical and mechanical properties.</p>

<h2>RAMMED-EARTH</h2>
<p>Rammed Earth is actually an ancient building method in revival. It is a technique in which the right proportion of earth, sand, clay, and gravel is mixed with added stabilizer that helps in attaining a mixture which promotes sustainability to the structures. However, we have to admit that it is highly labor-intensive. Rammed Earth buildings are durable, fireproof and have good thermal mass.</p>

<h2>STRAW-BALE</h2>
<p>As the name suggests, the non-edible part of grains, rice, oats etc. are used for construction. That is true in many western countries. One will be amazed to see that pros that the baled straw gas over conventional building materials. Whether it’s sustaining high temperatures or the durability. The houses made of baled straw have high insulation values that go up to R-35.Higher is the R value, higher is the insulation.</p>

<h2>CORDWOOD</h2>
<p>Cordwood construction or the more famously “firewood” construction is the one in which small roundly cut pieces of wood are used as basic masonry units. Mud or cement plaster is required to give the finishing. The yield of such building materials is a rustic and beautiful creation. Cordwood has an advantage of good insulation and thermal mass.</p>

<h2>EARTHBAGS</h2>
<p>These are actually the sacks of the locally available earth which are stacked up to build houses. Adapted from the technique of bunkers in the army, this method is quite inexpensive and fast in terms of a building process. It also gives flexibility when it comes to giving the building its form. Barbed wire is used to keep the bags in position.</p>

<p>The building construction industry itself produces a lot of waste or materials which are unaccounted for. Building wastes include the scrapped wood, railings etc. which often constitute to a lot of materials which can’t be fitted into one category. Hence they can be reused for the building purposes.</p>
<h2>MASONRY</h2>
<p>When we speak about masonry, we often tend to look at the conventional form of a brick building but we forget the roots of it. The natural masonry includes the stones and the bricks which have been used from prehistoric times. The structures built are extremely durable and can survive the harsh climate of the tropics. It is so optimum to use that we still use it today, just that the materials have been replaced. Not that it is the best form of building construction but nothing better has been invented.</p>

<p>Renouned architect<strong> Frank Gehry</strong> rightly puts in his words which we all truly secretly believe- <strong>“Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness”</strong>.The architecture speaks of its times, the culture, and the values and somehow becomes the identity of the era. Since inception of mankind, everything including the very human skin has evolved and architecture is no exception. With time Architecture has been conceived by necessity, shaped by vision, glorified by pride and celebrated by heritage. If a kid born in the present generation does not pay a visit to monuments built centuries ago or is not given history assignments, it will hard for him to believe that an arch was actually niched out of stone wall that the pyramid boxes he plays with are actually full-fledged structure in Egypt. That is the power of Transformation and drawing parallel between the ancient and the modern is quite a task.<br>Speaking objectively the ancient architecture and modern architecture are poles apart like night and day with time being the horizon only chord connecting the two. We can’t literally differentiate the two because the latter is a derivation of the former catalyzed by advancement, need and of course by the Architects themselves. So here are a few contrasts that will point out the Stark difference between the ancient and the modern architecture.</p>
<h2>USE OF MATERIALS</h2>
<p>One of the most visible difference between the ancient buildings and the modern ones is the use of materials. In the older times, stone and its derivatives were the basic or should I say the only material used. Whether it’s the churches of medieval Europe or the Mosques in South East Asia, one cannot imagine these structures without stone. On the other hand the modern buildings, especially the high rise ones cannot be imagined without a glass façade. A first level study of all modern buildings would reveal that role of stone is limited to that of aesthetics. All thanks to the advancement in technology that we now have a plethora of options to choose depending on the various criteria that determine as to which material to use.</p>

<p>If one is to gauge how important architecture has become in our lives we need to stop for a second and look back at the typology of the buildings in which the people invested in before and now. Back in the ancient times only religious structures like churches, temples or at  the most palaces that people invested in at least in terms of architect .As a result the ancient architecture was ornamental in nature. It was important to veil the skeleton of the building with pilasters, carvings, paintings etc. While the modern architecture is nothing but quite brutalize in nature. The sharp form of buildings, minimal facades reflects the era in which we live in.</p>
<h2>HORIZONTAL VS. VERTICAL</h2>
<p>Visuals of the plans of ancient structures and the modern indicate one strong environmental aspect of the society lack of space. Ancient structures were planned very splendidly, spreading horizontally to unfathomable distances, literally. As a result the buildings were spread out. Unfortunately the architects today have been denied this privilege due to the shortage of spaces. They overcome the challenges with a more compact plan and moving the spaces vertically. This scaled up the trends of High rise buildings comings with its pros and cons which is a different debate altogether.</p>

<h2>REGIONAL TO GLOBAL</h2>
<p>Bluntly compare two pictures below. If I ask you what these buildings, you would smoothly say that the one on the left is a church but the one the right is…..!!You need to brainstorm a little isn’t it? Let me tell inform you that it is a church as well. The difference is that the former is an ancient church which has its traditional longitudinal form decked with arches, bell tower etc. while the one on the right is a modern church. With the evolution in architecture the buildings today break away from the rigidity of traditions and is more experimental in nature. You cannot really tell whether the structure is church, a museum, a theatre or building of national importance. The designs have become, let’s say, universal. No wonder, an architect from London can actually design a building in India inspite of the cultural differences between the two regions because the difference is not reflected in the architecture today.</p>

<p>If we dig deeper into the analysis of this change in architectural phenomenon from Ancient to Modern, we realize it’s the change in human society which has directly or indirectly caused the transformation. It is not really a Change but rather shift in the perspective in human needs. The construction of Forts and palaces stopped with the world abolishing the ancient system of monarchy and adopting other formats of governments. The advancement of engineering and the invention of concrete accelerated the changes to a large extent. We can’t call it a change but rather a dimension of the process of evolution. With the rate at which we are progressing in all aspects of life, this gap between the ancient and the modern shall broaden and the results may or may not be catastrophic.</p>

How different is Ancient and Modern Architecture

<p>What if you are asked to describe the taste of a Doughnut Burger…? Confused right. How can one describe the taste of Umami, which is both savory and sweet? Describing the life of an architecture student is just like that. One just runs out of words. The life of an architecture student is as they say <em>larger than life</em>, literally. Still on a broader level below are summed up, the plethora of things that an architecture student goes through.</p>
<h2><strong>CLASSROOM AS DESIGN STUDIO</strong></h2>
<p>First, the good part. Design studio of architecture students or their “Classrooms” give a tinge of Alice of Wonderland in the beginning. A land of fantasy for students of other streams. A large drafting table wholly for oneself with the supporting spaces for stationaries, fascinating ambiance of <em>starchitects </em>pictures with their works and the flexibility unlike our engineering counterparts where you can eat talk and sometimes even sleep in the studios is something that gives others a bit of complex. It’s not just a studio, it’s our second home.</p>

<h2><strong>ARCHITECTURE STUDENT- STUDY TRIPS</strong></h2>
<p>Now the best part. Whether it’s the site visit for building construction or the visiting the old mausoleum of the town for measured drawing, college trips are an integral part of any college going person in general but when I say its architecture student’s trip, it is on another level. Unraveling unknown destinations and different regions with their food, their cultures is a feeling one cannot explain in words. Travel is in the genes of any architecture student and trusts me no other profession celebrates travel like architecture. And if you are an architecture student you are lucky to have this pro.</p>

<p>And now the worst part, the workload. Pursuing a degree in architecture is quite a challenge. The course demands us to work supremely hard against time, literally. The one thing common in all architecture students is that the shortage of time that we face compared to the amount of work to be done is that we end up compromising on our sleep and end up staying up all night to get the work done. This is a trait which is quite common for all architecture students and even in architects.</p>

<h2><strong>STATIONARY</strong></h2>
<p>Have you ever had your seven-year-old nephew picking up your T-scale and exclaiming “wow, what a sword!” Maybe it's just me. But I am sure similar amusements must have been with you when it comes to our stationaries, at least until we are accustomed to the computer-based software and use them for the design. Whether it’s the expensive color pencils that itch our pockets or the laser cutting we do for the model making, we cannot deny the awesome sensation of working with the so-called “tools”.</p>

<p>Juggling with the historical sketches to the estimation calculations, from drafting building construction sheets to making presentations, an architecture student has to cope with almost all the aspects of a building. Given the strict deadlines, it is quite painful for us to invest time and energy in non-academic activities like an outing in the weekend or attending the wedding of the long lost cousin. We often have to bear the brunt of being a bit anti-social on a personal account but on a professional front, we are supposed to make as many contacts as possible, an important trait for our profession.</p>

<h2><strong>ALL-ROUNDERS</strong></h2>
<p>Well, the construction industry is quite huge and complicated and to hone oneself to become a good architect, architecture students are groomed in every subject directly or indirectly related to the industry. Whether it’s the communication skills to woo the clients or the studying sustainable technology to enhance our buildings. From micro level town planning to the macro level furniture design elective, architecture students are taught almost every subject related to the profession.</p>

The Life Of An Architecture's Student

<p>Two sides of the same coin, is probably the most appropriate proverb that define architecture and Interior design together. Drawing a parallel between the two would give acute differences that are related to the same aspect. Its like comparing skin and flesh, both part of the same identity, following similar functions to achieve a common goal yet belong to different genres. Theoretically both the departments are different but that’s just on papers. The difference bliurs out in reality. When we conceive a design, its not just about how it <em>looks</em> but also how it makes us <em>feel</em>. Let us have look on what brings them together and what takes them poles apart.</p>
<h2><strong>MAGNIFICENCE VS COMFORT</strong></h2>
<p>Every architect has unsaid ambition of building a structure that stands out in the crowd (wishing one day his name would), to craft a vision that may stand amongst other buildings but stand miles away metaphorically. On the contrary an interior designers challenge is to make us feel that all the spaces are in sync with each other and not deviating from our visual comfort. For both the approaches the aim is different. Architecture craves for magnificence while interiors for comfort. One wants to <em>stand out</em> while the other want to <em>fit in.</em></p>

<p>An unknown saying suggest that architects are hired to impress others while interior designers are hired to express oneself. We shall not get into what the idea behind that said but the functional use of architecture and interiors is quite opposite. While the architecture is supposed to be the public realm of the building, the interiors is the private part. The architecture has to follow the certain rules like in form of building bye laws because at the end it is a public structure while the interiors has its flexibility and is designed as per the whims of a person.</p>

Its rigid character goes beyond temporary glitches. That’s is not true for the interiors. It gives the flexibility to remodel itself with the change of time. The trends change and evolve and the interior is not afraid to walk the tides of transmission.</p>

<p>An architecture student has an outshining privilege before he or she conceives the design. That privilege is known as <em>case study </em>among the profession. Before designing a building, we (as architecture students) get to do a hand on the study of a live project of the similar genre that helps us to understand the scope of the project better. We get a hindsight on the architect’s design principle, functions algorithm, what worked and what didn’t. An in-depth analysis helps us to visualize our own design better and control the parameters in our own way. How this study affects us depends on how we deal with it. Now this is a topic of good discussion and lets plainly summarize it’s as below:</p>
<h2><strong>LITERATURE</strong></h2>
<p>Often as students, we are not aware of the objective of the project, what is its scope? We are not sure if the requirements that we have framed are enough or are the spaces covered sufficiently. All such queries are answered by the case study. We are exposed to the various details of the live project that enable us to study which will eventually help us make our literature strong.</p>

The different styles in architecture have been dictated by cultures and regions across the globe and apparently showcase the identity of the era. <h2><strong>PREHISTORIC TIMES</strong></h2>
<p>The prehistoric times only has seen the Egyptian civilization mark the beginning of the construction industry with the design of the Great Pyramids which still stand with pride and shine for their timelessness. The structure marked grandeur and simplicity with no ornamentation but exposed the advancement in both the art and engineering of that time.</p>

<h2><strong>ROMANESQUE</strong></h2>
<p>This style of architecture spread across Europe with the churches becoming grander and making the architecture richer, we saw the evolution of semi-domes, arches ornamentation and other intricate details on the surface, for say the blind arches. Vaults found a new identity and so did the thick walls. Symmetrical plans had borrowed their characteristics from the predecessor-the Byzantine style.</p>
