<p>The ongoing <a href="https://www.planndesign.com/articles/2913-how-covid-19-affecting-architecture-business" target="_blank">pandemic has not only affected architecture as an industry</a> but has affected architecture education as well. The pandemic affected the way that architecture discourses were delivered. The virus led universities and educational institutes to shut down all over the world, taking in-person classes to online platforms. Though the system helps deliver lectures and maintain academic schedules, the long-term effects are unknown. Post pandemic <a href="https://www.planndesign.com/articles/2754-challenges-faced-architectural-education-affecting-profession" target="_blank">architecture education</a> is certainly going to be a different realm in the context of the syllabus, discourse delivery, workshops, exposure, etc. The virus has altered architecture education in ways unimagined. The situation has impacted the students and teachers alike. Following are few observations as to how the COVID 19 is affecting architecture education –</p>
<h2><strong>Transition and Adaptation to Interface Switch</strong></h2>
<p>The pandemic led to a transition from physical classes to online classes. Imagining the architecture discourse being delivered efficiently and benefiting the students through the online mode is a little unscrupulous. Architecture is a practical field of diverse nature, based on interactions and explorations at various levels – peer to peer, student and faculty, industry interactions, etc. The level of interactions and explorations that can happen in a physical studio is way more than those that happen over an online mode.</p>

<p>While every one of us has tried to welcome and adapt to the online modes of working in life, with architecture education, 100% online mode cannot be the answer.</p>

<h2><strong>Peer Learning</strong></h2>
<p>Architecture is and has never been about lectures and classroom studies solely, it is more about practical and on the ground exposure, peer-to-peer interaction, brainstorming sessions, deliberations, so on and so forth. Architecture as a course is more about experiential learning than listening to monologues. With the online mode of education, this aspect of architecture has taken a blow. In my view, students might have missed on valuable experiences and insights owing to being locked up in the comfort of their homes and increased screen time. The clarity of concepts and design development comes from deliberations at various levels, online mediums pose a barrier in this context.</p>

<h2><strong>Limited! – Discussions, Deliberations, Brainstorming, …</strong></h2>
<p>Online platforms were certainly able to facilitate lectures, however, the much-required discussions, deliberations and/or brainstorming sessions in groups were limited. This in turn limited the exchange of ideas resulting in limited development of concepts and ideologies. Many architecture schools encourage the trend of open studios to strike conversations and deliberations amongst the students and faculty. This can happen seamlessly on campus in most of the institutes, however, the online mode of education poses a great barrier in this regard.</p>

<h2><strong>Skill Development</strong></h2>
<p>Architecture is a skill-based course. Skills can be developed both online and offline, however, there are certain interpersonal skills and hard skills that develop better in a physical class. This becomes especially important for the students in the former years of the course. One can certainly watch and learn a lot of skills through the abundance of videos available over the web, however, to master a certain set of skills, constant interaction is essential. Skill development is an important part of architecture education. Certain skills can sure be developed through online platforms and MOOC courses, nonetheless, some skills can only be developed through constant instruction, institute infrastructure and face-to-face interaction.</p>
<h2><strong>No On-Field Exposure</strong></h2>
<p>Architecture education encompasses regular field visits, site visits and market surveys in addition to lectures and studios. Students suffered in this aspect of education due to the lockdown that was imposed in the nation. field visits or site visits were not an option during the ongoing pandemic, posing a setback to the students with regards to the practical exposure.</p>

<h2><strong>Extended Institutional Boundaries</strong></h2>
<p>While there are negatives that came bundled up with the situation, there are positives too. Though the students lacked field exposure over the pandemic hit a year, but in many institutions, they got a chance to interact and engage with designers nationally and internationally, enrolled in numerous workshops and insightful webinars. Even the most dreaded end Sem juries and critiques took place over online forums. This helped in widening the horizons of the students by engaging experts from diverse walks of life, thereby extending the typical institutional boundaries.</p>
<h2><strong>Exploratory Limitations and Exploratory Pedagogy</strong></h2>
<p>The lockdown resulted in a lack of resources and paraphernalia for many students and technical gear for faculties. But at the end of the day, we are architects and <a href="https://www.planndesign.com/articles/2757-life-architectures-student" target="_blank">architects in the making</a>, meant to come up with solutions for the issues at hand. And we did just that! All the faculties and students with their limitations explored and innovated ways to meet the requirements of the course. <br>The pandemic paved a way for faculties to explore collaborative opportunities for themselves and their students. The crisis gave way for explorations and innovations in the pedagogic methods. Some of which might even stay when things resume post-pandemic. The digital platforms and tools would certainly make their way post-pandemic as an integral part of design education.</p>

<p>The battle is still on! However, we are learning to live with the virus. Taking one step at a time, adapting to the conditions, innovating and bringing about a change in all spheres of our lives. The tough times make us believe that – “the show must go on!” And so it did, after a couple of weeks of being stuck and at a loss of ways to go about the situation, contemplations, the education continued with certain modifications, adaptations and transitions. “Change is the only constant” and the world changed during the pandemic hit period. The realm of education saw unimaginable changes. The crisis is an opportunity to change and evolve, it is a perfect time to reflect upon and move ahead with the positives and transition into a new era. The Covid-19 pandemic has its goods and bad, but it is us who will evolve as a generation once the pandemic subsides. It has affected architecture education both positively and negatively, but the academicians strive to put their bests to convert the negatives to positives and help evolve the architecture education scenario.</p>

<p>I really cannot find a word that can sum up architecture, but the line quoted above by <em>LI Kahn</em> is close to what architecture really is! It is diverse yet specific, monumental yet compact, personal yet global and most importantly it is surrounding everyone!</p>
<p>I could list innumerable reasons why architecture is an amazing profession, but I’m going to narrow it down to my top 10. As you go along reading this article you will realize that architecture as a field touches many other areas and is intricately woven into the social fabric of the society. So, it will tap into a lot of qualities that you possess rather than just one as it is an amalgamation of sorts.</p>
<h2><strong>Passion for buildings and spaces</strong></h2>
<p>Winston Churchill said a very powerful line in his speech once, “We shape our buildings, and afterward, they shape us.” As architects, we play a major role in shaping cities at both micro and macro level. If you are influenced by the ever-changing environment and want to play a role in steering it towards a healthier and sustainable future, then your future is here.</p>

<p>Every space has a unique quality and is a reflection of people who occupy it and their culture. <p>There is so much in architecture, one could never learn it all. Naturally, a lot of architects prefer to specialize in a field that appeals to them- it could be sustainability, planning, vernacular architecture, heritage conservation or facade designing among many others. Due to the nature of the profession, architects also happen to know a little bit of everything. This is because the construction of a building is a team effort, and you are dealing with a variety of people from various fields.</p>

<p>Architects are very detail oriented. They would stop and look at buildings, appreciate minute details that a person from another profession would probably not realize. <p>One of the best parts of being an architect is that you actually get to see the fruits of your labor. The continuous work months, meetings, end moment changes and hectic schedules finally pay off to an amazing built structure. Designing is a very exhilarating process, no doubt, but it is only a part of the architecture. Designing is followed by on-site construction activities, after which we finally see the building. The architecture industry has a wide array of professionals with very unique and individualistic creativity. This is reflected in the different types of buildings we find around us.</p>

<h2><strong>Creative designing and constant evolving</strong></h2>
<p>We get the freedom to design, showcase our creativity. But just to clear out a myth, we are not artists; Architects have to look into a lot of technical details, building technology, and on-site construction activities. The limits in designing are endless, and that is what makes it exciting. There is no fixed route one has to take to find a solution to a problem. Every solution is unique and has its own possibilities. During the designing process architects are never rigid and keep a flexible mind to find the best possible solution. That is why designing is considered an evolving process. There is always scope for improvement!</p>

Architecture can greatly improve the quality of life, and make way for a better world for the coming generation.</p>

Most of the Renowned architects are still involved in their firms post the age of retirement, it could be Raj Rewal, BV Doshi or Norman Foster to name a few. Architects just get better with experience and that is probably why they practice for as long as they are able to.</p>

<p>Fresh out of college, with the internship and everything else that follows, freshers and interns face a lot of challenges in the working conditions of an office and to adapt to it can be really difficult at times. But as the works progress, all of us start learning from the experiences and find ways out to make the most out of each experience.</p>
<h2>Unable To Express:</h2>
<p>When one starts working in a professional environment, with more experience people, the first major challenge comes across in expression. Expressing the kind of work you are good at or you would like to do, is important. Because that usually decides your role in the firm that you have been appointed in. But, usually seniors try to reach out, and there will always be someone you can confide in and express.</p>

<h2>Trying To Cope With The Pace:</h2>
<p>Being a student in college, and an intern in an office, have very different demands when it comes to pace of work, and the need to cope with it. The drawings and the quality and sadly, even the quantity at an office cannot be compromised. The drawings that need to send in a day cannot reduce, because the work has to progress, and it won’t unless the quantity of drawings is right. So, this definitely comes off as a major challenge for the interns. The timelines cannot be pushed, and thus, the need to keep up.</p>
<h2>Sudden Shift To Longer Working Hours:</h2>
<p>As a student, time bounds are as per their wish, the work can be done at any time for how many hours as one wishes, and at whatever time. But, offices have particular timings, and everyone is bound by it. This sudden shift is underrated, but it is challenging at the same time.</p>

<h2>Unawareness:</h2>
<p>Usually, every office has their standard procedures that define the workflow of the place, and sometimes you can be unaware of certain ways or softwares or even words that they use on a daily basis. There is no wrong in not knowing. Ask people around for help or use the internet to the best. Search words you don’t know, or learn the software through some seniors or online tutorials.</p>
<h2>To Learn And Unlearn:</h2>
<p>Sometimes, what you learn has to be re-learned or unlearned when you start working professionally. Because, every place has its cultural and climatically varying priorities and sometimes you might have to learn something entirely new and different, Transitionin order to achieve something and sometimes you might have to unlearn something. But you will never be losing any knowledge, because architecture is far and wide spread and every ounce of knowledge of it will always be useful.</p>

<p>Feeling involved at a new place and at an entirely new setup is always a challenge, no matter how old or youngThe transition is always difficult. But the key is to being proactive, and sharing the knowledge you have and the learning all you can. Be upright.</p>

<p>All the above efforts will only be worth putting if you actually work at a place you like or do the work you like. Otherwise efforts are in vain. So when you are choosing a place to work, choose wisely, because it should be as you desire, maybe not entirely but still, somewhere you don’t feel you cannot even make an effort to belong there. Take advice from college seniors, ask them the experience of working where they did and research and choose accordingly.</p>

<p>Apart from searching online, there is always word of mouth information about the people that you know are somehow related to the field. Ask them, see the projects they have completed and decide if it is the right fit.</p>

<p>When you finally meet the architects, communicate about your project properly. Let them know what you expect of them and in what period of time. Every architect or their firm, has a certain way of designing, try to understand that and if you don’t like it, then switch to another architect/firm.</p>

<p>Firstly, as a client and as an employer you must be open to options and analyzing the designs. Top Things To Know Before Starting Architecture Programme

<p>The above statements are thrown at architecture students at least once during their education. These come to perspective only when faced with a situation. One of which is entering an architecture office for the experience.</p>
<p>Right out of college into the pool of this professional world, most of the students are lost.</p>
<p>Stepping into an architecture college calls for sleepless nights, tussle with self, finding new perspectives, re-thinking the old ones and most importantly, an ability to question all that exists. "Questioning" is one skill that an architecture student learns during his years of study.</p>
<p>Despite everything, it can't be denied that the student is lost in the process of becoming a professional with some open-ended questions hovering his mind.</p>
<h2>Is this for me?</h2>
<p>It is a fact less known that Architecture colleges don't train the students to deal with practicality.  After five years of hard work, a student expects some return after leaving the university. From artistic freedom on the campus where he would dream to build the impossible, he is brought down to a regular job where nothing matches his expectations.</p>
<p>At this point, while some adjust to the change, there are few who "<strong>QUESTION</strong>".</p>

<p>Many become clear to not go for higher education and prefer utilizing the time in refining their skills.
